ºìÌÒÊÓÆµ at Home

ºìÌÒÊÓÆµ at Home pairs each student with a volunteer literacy tutor for free, weekly, online tutoring sessions. This program is currently available for K–4 students in Newark.

Students receive weekly sessions with a trained volunteer tutor using ºìÌÒÊÓÆµ’ science of reading–aligned curriculum. The program supports students in building foundational reading skills and confidence, and all materials and training are provided to tutors.

How to get involved

For students:

  • Express interest by completing the family registration form .
  • Ensure student attendance for weekly virtual tutoring sessions.
  • Provide consent and support for the student’s participation.
  • Commit to one 45-minute session per week, Monday – Thursday 4:30pm-6:30pm ET.

For volunteer tutors:

  • Complete the volunteer sign up form here.
  • Attend a brief virtual orientation and training (no prior teaching experience needed).
  • Commit to one 45-minute session per week, Monday – Thursday 4:30pm-6:30pm ET.
  • Support one student for the duration of the program (until June 12, 2026).

Frequently asked questions

ºìÌÒÊÓÆµ is a nonprofit organization that provides elementary-aged students with the proven, individualized reading support that helps strengthen literacy skills and work toward grade-level reading by fourth grade.

You will select a time and date for your child’s weekly tutoring sessions. Then, we will pair your child with a volunteer tutor who’s passionate about helping young readers thrive. Your child and their tutor will meet on our secure online learning platform once a week and follow our data-driven curriculum for the duration of a summer, semester, or school year term.

Note: All tutors complete background checks and screening.

ºìÌÒÊÓÆµ trains and supervises community volunteers to work one-on-one with your child once a week for 45 minutes.

  • Before enrolling your child in ºìÌÒÊÓÆµ, you will sign a parent permission form so that you are fully aware of your student’s participation in the program. The ºìÌÒÊÓÆµ team routinely observe sessions, coaches tutors, and provides regular feedback.
  • All tutors go through background checks in alignment with district policies before beginning to volunteer with ºìÌÒÊÓÆµ.

We assess your child’s reading skills, place them in our curriculum at their individual reading level, monitor sessions for literacy gains, and maximize individualized learning opportunities while enrolled in the program. Learn more about our program’s efficacy here.

  • Each lesson begins with the tutor reading aloud to the student from a book the child has selected. The tutor asks questions and discusses the book’s content and vocabulary with the student.
  • The tutor then introduces a new skill or concept and helps the student complete an introductory task.
  • The lesson ends with the tutor supporting the student while they read and encouraging the student to apply the new skill and/or concept.

Students need just three things to get started: (1) a desktop/laptop computer or iPad, (2) internet connection, (3) a signed parent/guardian permission form.

    1. Once your student is enrolled, you will receive unique login information to sign into the online tutoring platform. Once you’re logged in, you can join the session at the scheduled time. If you log in too early, please wait for the session time to join. Once the tutor starts the session, they will guide the student through the lesson.
